Why do clients come to Ben's?
What makes Ben’s Centre special for our clients?
The individuals that use Ben’s Centre can have a range of addictions and issues that initially bring them through our door. But Ben’s is a special place for its clients and many come on a regular basis. We asked them why, and what makes Ben’s so special to them?
The most common theme was that having a day centre facility gives the day structure, routine and order away from temptations at home or allowing them to be away from influences that might not be the best for them. Clients sometimes live in temporary accommodation or on the streets, which can be an unstable environment with people influencing them to take substances or chasing them for money. This is why we open our doors every day even if just one client shows up. Giving a place of safety and stability to a life that can be quite disordered impacts clients beyond just the time they spend in our building. For some clients, just leaving their accommodation and getting some fresh air is a big step.
Another common theme was the staff. Ben’s Centre staff and volunteers are always an open ear for a friendly chat. There is never any pressure to access services, but staff will guide individuals when they are ready. Staff know clients names, likes and dislikes and aspects of their lives that are positive or challenging. Individuals that come here feel supported by staff. One example of where staff went out of their way to help given was when a client moved from the streets into their first tenancy, staff ordered and stored new furniture in the centre as the client had no internet. The client said how much pressure this took off them at a stressful time and they remember it to this day. Building trusting relationships is key to helping vulnerable people access services; many are distrustful of conventional doctors or council services. By creating a place they feel safe and supported, we can begin to knock down some of the walls that block individuals from accessing services before the problems compound. The impact of clients not trusting services is far reaching - it can affect their housing, finances and health hugely. Hopefully, by being a place of comfort and support, we can help individuals get further help.
