History Club
When Covid-19 first hit and the world locked down, one way we safely supported clients was with a phone service. Staff would phone individuals to see how they were getting on, what they needed by way of support and to have a general chat. One of the popular themes of these chats was what clients would like to do after the pandemic, once they could once again come into Ben’s. With our new premises on Wilkinson Street, we also had the space and capacity to be able to offer more. A suggestion that came up many times was that clients would like to know more about the history of the local area. From that the Ben’s Centre History Club was born. The group is overseen by Sue but led by clients interests and wishes. The history club meets every Tuesday afternoon to discuss local history, architecture and more.
Partnerships have been formed with the 999 Museum in Kelham Island and Mr P Dreadful (famous Sheffield ghost tour guide), to provide interesting and engaging activities for the history club. An exciting programme of events and trips have already been planned, from walks around Kelham Island, the 999 Museum, Ghost walks and Architectural walks. Ben is also planning a workshop on the famous Sheffield cutlery, complete with items from his own collection. Sue is also looking forward to spending some time in the Sheffield library archives digging out the history of our new building at 22 Wilkinson Street, so stay tuned for an update about our space (and any ghosts that might be inside!).
Are you knowledgeable about a certain part of Sheffield or its history? Could you spare a few hours to come and present to our club? If so we would love to hear from you.
